The text tells the story of Melba Bradley (nursing student graduate) and Napoleon Gorman (son of a mobster). They meet after Melba arrives from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Manhattan, New York on her first ever out-of-state trip to enjoy a two-week vacation with her Cousin Verlanda and her Aunt Ellen and Uncle Cubon before settling into a job and working to death for the rest of her life. Next to Verlanda’s New York sophistication, Melba feels so like the Tennessee hick she knows herself to be that she has herself remodeled to look just like her cousin. However, unbeknownst to Melba, something Verlanda did a week before her arrival has gotten her on the wrong side of the bad element. Thus, after seeing her off to the bus station when unexpected events call her out of town for a couple days, Melba returns to her aunt and uncle’ house and is kidnapped as soon as she steps from Verlanda’s car by her avengers. In addition, when they learn the next day that they have kidnapped the wrong woman in a clear-cut case of mistaken identity, they want innocent Tennessee hick Melba dead!
